Former Fat Kid Feels YOUR Pain!
I spent my entire childhood shackled by the burned of being overweight. As one of the few “fat kids” at school I was subject to an endless barrage of insults that STILL echo in my head today:
“Thunder Thighs”
“Fatso”
“Lard Ass”
“Chubby”
“You’re HUGE”
“Chunky Butt”
“Lose Some Weight!”

That last line was actually pretty clever, ha ha… but still uncalled for!
Probably the worst part about being fat is that people automatically assume that you smell or fart a lot. Some of my most painful memories revolve around always being blamed for any bad smell or passing of gas in the classroom. I mean seriously, no matter how fat I got, I always took care of myself from a hygiene standpoint. But just because I was looked at as fat and disgusting, my peers simply assumed that anything repulsive (or smelly) had to be a byproduct of what they viewed as my worthless existence.
And of course I was way too embarrassed and ashamed to ever take my shirt off.
Swimming at pool parties? Forget about it!
Whenever my friends would ask me why I didn’t get in the water, I’d lie by saying that:
“I’m allergic to chlorine and it burns my skin so I can’t swim.”
Yep, I couldn’t stand the public humiliation of taking my shirt off so everybody could see my rolls. I would even shower in the dark because I didn’t want to catch my hideous reflection in the mirror because it would ruin my whole day.
It’s not that I ever wanted to be fat. NOBODY EVER WANTS TO BE FAT! I just didn’t have any positive individuals around me willing to guide me towards a healthier, more fit lifestyle.
Coaches used to say to me:
“GADDOUR! Your big and lazy self is slowing the whole drill down!”
And then at the end of every sporting season I was giving the same USELESS advice:
“You’re overweight and out of shape. You need to lose weight for next season if you want to play. Just go running for an hour every day and stop eating so much to work that weight off, that will do the trick!”
I can’t even begin to examine everything that is WRONG about that statement and that’s a whole other story in itself about “how not to coach youth athletes”…
BUT, I SIMPLY HAD NO CLUE WHAT TO DO!
Sure, I tried to follow this bogus advice by jumping on a treadmill and going for as long as I could to burn calories. Yet, I could only go for about 3-5 minutes at a time before I had to stop because I was so de-conditioned.
It’s hard to do something when it’s overwhelmingly DIFFICULT and PAINFUL. I was constantly out of breath and my knees were killing me. And I felt so self-conscious anytime I ran because my big tummy would “make waves” and my man boobs would “flap around.” Not too sexy!
SO I JUST GAVE UP AND ACCEPTED THAT I WAS JUST A FAT KID AND I NEEDED TO GET OVER IT!
Then there was that one fateful day when my life changed forever. I saw the exact picture of myself below from the family cruise we just went on during winter break of my junior year in high school.

I was absolutely disgusted with what I saw.
I saw someone who was a prisoner to his physical condition.
I saw that dreaded double chin.
I saw man boobs.
I saw someone who was depressed and hated his life!
This picture was the climax of a host of other symptoms of my poor physical condition:
- My knees were wrecked from years of patellar tendonitis brought on by being overweight and not being taught how to properly perform strength and conditioning exercises
- I was wearing a 3X shirt and a size 44 pants and topped the scale at 272 lbs at 17 years old! Not a lot of muscle either…
- I became a social parasite: too fat to hang with the guys and too chunky to get the attention of the ladies
I NEEDED TO MAKE A CHANGE!
So I went online and started looking for fat loss training tips and I came across a lot of articles talking about the benefits of sprinting for fat loss and doing something called INTERVALS.
Essentially, I learned that I could burn more fat and get in better shape alternating between a sprint portion and a recovery portion for about 10-20 minutes. This sure seemed like it would beat that long, slow, boring, and painful 1-hour run on the treadmill that was recommended to me as the supposed solution.
But my knees were really bad at the time, so I decided to start with a stationary recumbent bike. This allowed me to be able to work at a high-intensity during the sprint portions of my interval workouts with much lower-impact to my knees.
I would pedal as fast as I could at the highest resistance I could handle for 30 seconds and then pedal slowly at a lower resistance for 90 seconds. I would perform this 2-minute interval 10x for 20 total minutes, not including a 5-minute warm-up and cool-down. I would increase the pedal resistance a bit from workout to workout to keep getting better.

Impact of exercise intensity on body fatness and skeletal muscle metabolism. Metabolism. 1994 Jul; 43(7): 814-8
This study compared 20 weeks of steady-state endurance training and 15 weeks of interval training. The interval training group showed 9x greater loss is subcutaneous fat than the endurance group. In addition, researchers found that interval training caused certain metabolic changes in the skeletal muscle that promoted increased fat oxidation.
Breakthrough Interval Training Study#2
Researchers at the University of NSW and the Garvan Institute studied 45 overweight women over 15 weeks. This Australian study compared a 20-minute interval workout (done three times per week) against a 40-minute slow cardio workout (also done three times per week). The Women did the workout for 15 weeks, and only the interval group lost belly fat. The slow cardio group got practically no results at all. They found their specific brand of interval training prompts the body to click into a metabolic response that allows more fat to be burned both under the skin and within the muscles.
"The Interval Training group lost three times more weight as other women who exercised at a continuous, regular pace for 40 minutes," UNSW Associate Professor Steve Boutcher said. “Their success was due to higher amounts of chemical compounds called catecholamines that are produced in increasing amounts when linked to interval sprinting; the resulting chemical reaction drives greater weight loss.”

Or you could even buy a cardio machine for your home that will put you several hundreds or even thousands of dollars in the hole if it fits your budget.
But it’s always more enjoyable and beneficial to perform outdoor running or other alternative forms of conditioning outside especially when it’s nice and warm out!
And even though it is possible to perform these interval workouts outdoors with a stopwatch, let’s face it, it’s tough to have to sprint and look at the clock at the same time unless your goal is to run into a telephone poll (true story, ha ha). Intervals can be a bit dangerous if you are not in full control of your surroundings and if you are constantly looking down to check your watch!
Plus, to reap the most benefits from interval training you need to exert maximal intensity by being able to zone-in and eliminate any unnecessary distractions. This is almost impossible to do without someone telling you what to do because instinctually we will pace ourselves so that we are able to look at our watch.
In addition, for short intervals (e.g. 20 s on, 10 s off) it is simply unfeasible to be able to perform your workout without going too long on some sprints and/or starting too late on other sprints thus disrupting the prescribed optimal work-to-rest ratios for best results.
Now you could set your stopwatch up to stop and start so it will make those annoying beeping sounds, but then you couldn’t listen to your favorite music because then you wouldn’t know when to stop or start without hearing the beeps!
And anybody who works out knows how important good workout music is to increase workout consistency, motivation, and performance. In fact workout music is clinically proven to increase intensity and set the proper pace for your workout.
